Building Byelaws to be amended to increase utility of land

Shillong, June 4: Keeping in view the scarcity of land in Shillong, utility of land for buildings in Secretariat Hill and European Ward area will be increased to 60 per cent of the total area, as per a new amendment to the Meghalaya Building Byelaws, 2021 approved in the state cabinet on Wednesday.

The building byelaws has been made applicable in Secretariat Hill and European Ward area, chief minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

“Therefore, maximum permissible plot coverage area for public and semi-public buildings in the Secretariat Hill and European Ward area will be increased from 50% to 60% and similarly for mixed-use buildings too, it will be increased from 50% to 60%,” he said.

“This is being done with a view that the land is very scarce in these areas and hence the utility of land needs to be increased,” he stated.

Referring to major ongoing projects such as Ward’s Lake project and other tourism projects, he said, “We would like to see that maximum utility of the land is made in these areas.”
