Cabinet clears legal framework for tourist vehicle rentals

Shillong, Aug 7: The Meghalaya cabinet has approved a policy and legal framework for renting out motorcycles and vehicles to tourists and individuals, aiming to regulate the sector and ensure tourist safety.

“Two separate policies have been approved, one for motorcycles and one for vehicles,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters after chairing a meeting on Thursday.

The policy will require individuals and agencies renting out vehicles to tourists to register with the transport department, he said while adding that the framework aims to ensure the safety of tourists by regulating the rental sector, which has been operating without oversight until now.
