Candlelight vigil held for four-year-old in Shillong

Shillong, Sept 16: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Monday organized a candlelight vigil at the Congress Bhavan to condemn the alleged brutal murder of four-year-old Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai, who went missing from her residence on Sunday morning, and later her body was recovered from an under constructed house at Nongrah Nonglum.

“This horrific incident has shaken the conscience of our society and left the entire community in grief and anger. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family in this darkest hour. The killing of an innocent child raises grave questions about the safety and security of our people, even within the supposed safety of their own homes and doorsteps,” the MPYC president Timjim K Momin said.

The MPYC has demanded that a Special Investigation be constituted to probe this case in a swift, transparent, and uncompromised manner.

“The perpetrators must be identified and punished at the earliest, so that justice is delivered to little Insaphira and her family,” Momin said.

“We also call upon the Government to: treat crimes against women and children as a top priority, not as routine cases, strengthen policing, especially in vulnerable areas, and set up special child protection units, work with Dorbar Shnongs and community bodies to create local safety networks, launch sustained awareness and vigilance campaigns to protect children and women, ensure fast-track courts for crimes against women and children so that justice is not delayed,”he added.

Stating that this tragedy is not an isolated case, the MPYC president stated that in recent months, Meghalaya has witnessed repeated incidents of crimes against women and children from the Williamnagar case to the Rajasimla case, and now the horrific Nongrah incident. These cases expose the State Government’s repeated failure to protect the most vulnerable sections of our society. Despite public outrage, little has been done to ensure safety and justice.

“(We) reiterate that a society is judged by how it protects its women and children. We will not remain silent as crimes continue to rise and the Government fails to act. We stand with the people of Meghalaya in demanding justice, accountability, and stronger safeguards for every family,” he added.
