Centre to protect NE from external threat: Govt

Shillong, Apr 4: The state government has expressed confidence over getting Centre’s adequate support to safeguard the North East from any kind of threat from across the border.

Referring to controversial remarks made by Bangladesh interim government’s chief advisor Muhammad Yunus while referring to North East during his recent visit to China, cabinet minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said, “I am sure the Centre will live up to our expectation and facilitate states in the NE to have adequate safety measures in view of growing threats from across the border.”

He also informed about the state government’s initiatives in this regard. “Such issues have been flagged by the chief minister himself before the union home ministry,” he said.

Stating that he too had a couple of discussions with the DG of BSF, Lyngdoh said, “They are alive to these concerns. There is a lot of area, which need adequate and immediate attention.”

Terming the current regime in Bangladesh as “very unstable”, he said, “They are bound to say a lot of things because they are actually not an elected government and they are also under a lot of pressure from within their own country.”

“The state government is alive to the need for us to prepare adequately to the challenges of a hugely populated neighbouring country, which is very unstable,” he added.

Informing that union home ministry has repeatedly asked various central establishments including forces like the BSF to be on their guard, he said, “This is indicative of the seriousness with which the issue is treated.”
