Child murders: Govt urged to activate local defence organisations

Shillong, Oct 11: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has expressed shock over the recent cases of child murders in the state and demanded for strengthening of Local Defence Organisations (LDOs) to tackle such heinous crimes.

The union suggested that LDOs, when properly coordinated with the police, can play a vital role in maintaining law and order, supporting night patrols, and reporting suspicious activities.

“The active involvement of LDOs would greatly help in safeguarding our communities and preventing further unfortunate incidents,” said JSU Shillong Circle adviser A Suchiang in a letter to Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong.

The repeated incidents of murder have caused fear and anxiety among parents and local communities, he said while urging the state government to take necessary steps to reactivate and ensure the proper functioning of LDOs to ensure the safety and security of citizens, especially the children.
