Union Home Minister inaugurates road, unveils statue of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in South Delhi

Guwahati, May 1: In a powerful and symbolic event in Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a statue of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma and inaugurated a road named in his honour—Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg—while issuing a stern warning to terrorists following the recent Pahalgam massacre that killed 26 tourists, including one Nepali national.

The road, located near the Kailash Colony Metro Station and previously part of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, now commemorates Bodofa, the revered Bodo leader who led a non-violent movement for the socio-political rights of the Bodo community. The event also marked the 35th death anniversary of Bodofa and fulfilled a long-standing demand of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU).

Speaking at the gathering, Shah condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, vowing a decisive and calculated retaliation.

“This fight is not over. Chun chun ke badla lenge—we will avenge every drop of blood. No terrorist will be spared. The Modi government is committed to wiping out terrorism from every inch of Indian soil,” Shah declared, adding that the world stands with India in its fight against terror.

The Home Minister warned the terrorists and their masters that the fight is not over and Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will give a befitting and precise response to their cowardly act.

The Home Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to dismantle terror networks within and outside and said, “It is our resolve to uproot terrorism from every inch of this country and it will be accomplished.”

“The whole world has come together with India and standing with 140 crore Indians in the fight against terrorism,” he added.

Referring to Bodofa, Shah praised his legacy of education, identity, and non-violence, calling the statue and renamed road a “tribute not just to Bodoland but to every indigenous and smaller community in India.”

“Bodofa envisioned a nation where identity and integrity coexist. His ideals remain more relevant than ever,” Shah said.

The event saw the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, BTC Chief Pramod Boro, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, MPs Bansuri Swaraj, Joyanta Basumatary, Rwngwra Narzary, ABSU President Dipen Boro, and other dignitaries.

In his address, Sarma called the occasion a proud moment for Assam and said Bodofa’s leadership was a turning point in the Bodo community’s peaceful movement for rights.

“With this gesture, the Modi-Shah leadership has shown that Assam and its people are part of India’s core narrative, not the periphery,” Sarma said, also announcing a biography of Lachit Borphukan and plans to name a military training program after the legendary Ahom general.

Speaking on the occasion, ABSU president Dipen Boro called the tribute “deeply moving,” and BTC Chief Pramod Boro said it symbolizes the success of Bodofa’s vision and the government’s commitment to the Bodo Accord.

The road renaming and statue unveiling mark the fulfilment of a long-standing demand by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU). Speaking on the occasion, BTC Chief Pramod Boro expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for honouring Bodofa Upendranath Brahma and recognizing the Bodo community’s contributions.

“This is a historic moment our people will never forget. Bodofa launched the Bodoland movement 35 years ago, and with the support of the government, we’ve made significant progress. The Bodo Accord was a turning point for peace and development, and the government’s ongoing commitment to its implementation is evident. This road and statue in the national capital are more than tributes—they’re a powerful reminder that indigenous voices matter in India’s national narrative,” Boro said.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta echoed the sentiment, saying: “Delhi represents all of India. Honouring Bodofa here is a sign of unity in diversity.”

To mark the occasion, ABSU lit over five lakh earthen lamps and candles across homes and public spaces in the Bodoland Territorial Region and greater Assam, turning the event into a statewide celebration of Bodofa’s legacy.

Organised by the Assam government, the event also commemorated Bodofa’s 35th death anniversary. He is remembered for his relentless work in promoting education, protecting indigenous identity, and advocating peaceful reforms for the Bodo community.
