Tura, March 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has appealed for calm and unity among residents of Garo Hills following tensions in Tura, saying he is “deeply saddened” by the current situation and urging people not to believe circulating misinformation.
In a statement, the Chief Minister said that in view of the prevailing public sentiment and the developing situation in Tura, he has cancelled the election. He stressed that the initiatives he had undertaken were based solely on the demands of the people and were intended to serve the interests of the community.
Sangma also addressed allegations made against him, stating that several claims circulating against him are “totally false.”
To maintain peace and ensure the safety of residents, the state government has deployed the army and paramilitary forces to assist the police. According to the Chief Minister, the decision was taken strictly to prevent violence and ensure that no lives are lost.
He also dismissed rumors spreading on social media claiming that “shoot-at-sight” orders had been issued and that civilians had been shot. The Chief Minister clarified that these claims are fake news and said he has never ordered the use of live fire against the public.
“As a Garo myself, I have always placed the interests of the people as my top priority,” Sangma said, emphasizing that his responsibility is to ensure the protection and well-being of the people of the region.
Calling for calm, the Chief Minister urged citizens to stand together during this difficult time. “In these challenging times, I appeal to our people to come together for peace and unity for Garo Hills,” he said.
