Shillong, Aug 17: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday expressed grief over the death of five residents of Dalu, West Garo Hills, who had travelled to West Bengal as pilgrims.
The state government has also announced an ex-gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
In a social media post, Sangma extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
“Our Government is coordinating with the authorities of West Bengal,” Sangma said while terming the incident an unimaginable tragedy.
The Office of the Additional Resident Commissioner at Meghalaya House is coordinating with the Birbhum district administration to ascertain further details and provide all possible official assistance to the affected families.
The state authorities are also facilitating the transportation of the mortal remains of the deceased to their native place.
