Baghmara, June 17: In a major move aimed at boosting rural livelihoods through community-driven activities and income-generating activities, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inaugurated 125 community centres spread across the Garo Hills under the Meghalaya Livelihood and Forest Ecosystem Management Project (MegLIFE), a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded initiative.
The chief minister arrived at scenic tourist spot Dobakol Awemong under Baghmara C&RD Block in South Garo Hills to launch the virtual inauguration of the centres that have come up across Garo Hills. He was joined by a host of dignitaries from the state, including Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas K Sangma, Ministers Marcuise Marak, Rakkam A Sangma, Abu Taher Mondal, and several MLAs who attended the programme.
Each of these community centres, built at a cost of ₹24 lakhs each (with ₹13 lakhs from the project and ₹11 lakhs from the state), aim to serve as a hub for communities to initiate various activities, including income-generating initiatives.
The MegLIFE project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), spanning 500 villages across 12 districts of the state, focuses on sustainable forest management and livelihood improvement.
The project has initiated several income-generating activities, including community nursery, plantation, minor irrigation check dams, dug-out ponds, plastic tanks, and RCC water storage tanks.
The IVCS and SHGs are integral to the project, receiving benefits and playing a vital role in its implementation.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that the project focuses on restoration of degraded forests, strengthening natural resource management, and improving rural livelihoods
He informed that the project empowers communities to take ownership of forest, land, and water resources.
“We want to build a community that initiates intervention for sustainable livelihood. Through MegLife project, we are creating environment consciousness and ensuring sustained income through different activities”, the chief minister said.
Under the project, the total target of 452 community centres across Meghalaya are to be completed.
Appreciating JICA for the support, the chief minister informed that another 150 plus community centres will be completed in Garo Hills.
Stating on the importance of these community centres in fostering community development and promoting livelihood initiatives. He highlighted the project’s focus on community empowerment and sustainable development.
He also interacted with the community who attended the programme virtually.
