Tura, March 17: The West Garo Hills district administration has clamped prohibitory orders with immediate effect across the region to prevent any law and order scenario in the aftermath of the seizure of a large consignment of lethal weapons from a group of people who were allegedly heading out of town to create disturbances in the plains belt region, last night.
Tura police successfully intercepted several vehicles with men carrying arms at Araimile police station late Monday night and during questioning learnt that the group had answered to the call by an ACHIK group to allegedly mobilise for a conflict in the plains belt.
In view of the prevailing law and order situation and reports indicating possible disturbances, the District Magistrate of West Garo Hills has imposed prohibitory orders under the BNSS, 2023 and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act, 1990.
The order restricts unlawful assemblies, processions, and demonstrations without prior permission. The use of loudspeakers and public address systems has also been regulated, while carrying of arms, explosives, or any harmful objects has been strictly prohibited.
Additionally, activities such as organizing training camps, inciting violence, damaging property, and spreading inflammatory content have been banned. Authorities have warned that any violation will invite strict legal action, with law enforcement agencies directed to ensure full compliance.
However, exemptions have been granted for essential services, government officials on duty, and individuals authorized by the District Administration.
Curfew extended, 12 hour relaxation stands
Meanwhile, the curfew in West Garo Hills has been extended from 6 AM on March 18 to 6 AM on March 19, 2026, with a 12-hour relaxation from 6 AM to 6 PM on March 18.
The order has come into immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
