Tura, May 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday unveiled a state-of-the-art solar-powered classroom at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Tura, marking a significant step toward sustainable education and digital empowerment.

The initiative was a collaboration between the Great Himalayan Expedition (GHE), PA Sangma Foundation, and Shree Cement company underscores Meghalaya’s commitment to integrating clean energy, education, and gender equity.

The smart classroom, equipped with desktops, internet connectivity, and audio-visual content aligned with the curriculum for Classes 6 to 12, aims to transform learning experiences.

“This project ensures our students, particularly girls, have the tools to dream bigger while promoting clean energy and digital access across the state,” Sangma said during the inauguration.

Highlighting the state’s vision to modernize government schools, Sangma emphasized a decentralized approach through tailored School Development Plans. “By involving teachers, parents, and communities, we’re ensuring schools meet local needs and rival private institutions,” he noted.

The Tura initiative includes a hybrid solar power system for uninterrupted electricity, alongside plans for infrastructure upgrades, digital literacy programs, safe drinking water, enhanced sanitation, and the introduction of Science and Commerce streams.

Sangma stressed the interconnectedness of education, climate action, and gender equity.

“Investing in a solar-powered classroom for girls is an investment in a sustainable, equitable future,” he said. Reflecting on the school’s legacy since 1931, he expressed confidence that enhanced facilities would empower students to become future leaders.

The Chief Minister also underscored the importance of community ownership for lasting change. “Sustainable development thrives when communities take charge,” he said. The broader School Development Plan envisions a complete overhaul, including renovated classrooms, a digital library, an ICT lab, and repairs to address issues like leaking roofs. This pioneering project sets a model for holistic education reform, blending technology, sustainability, and inclusivity to shape a brighter future for Meghalaya’s youth.
