CM terms racial attack on NE people ‘sickening’

Guwahati, March 9: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has termed “sickening” an alleged racial attack on two persons North East in New Delhi and sought stringent action against the perpetrators.

As per reports, a young woman from Manipur and a transgender person from Assam were allegedly assaulted by a group of men in a park near the Saket District Court complex in Malviya Nagar area on Sunday evening.

The incident once again raised concerns over safety of people from North East living in the national capital.

In his reaction, Sangma said he was angered by the repeated attacks on people from the region residing in mainland India.

“The physical attack on two of our people from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi is sickening. Racial bullying should not be accepted as the new normal and we must act against it. Urge the authorities to take stringent action,” the chief minister wrote on social media.

Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh also condemned the incident, expressing deep concern over the alleged racial harassment and assault.

“Deeply disturbed by the incident of racial harassment and assault involving two individuals from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court in Delhi. Such acts of racism and violence are completely unacceptable and have no place in our society,” Singh said.

He added that people from the Northeast must feel safe, respected and treated with dignity in every part of the country.

“I strongly condemn this incident and urge the authorities to ensure a swift investigation and strict action against those responsible,” he said.

The incident has once again brought attention to recurring allegations of racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeastern states in metropolitan cities.

Responding to posts on social media by Conrad Sangma and Biren Singh, the Delhi Police said a criminal case has been registered, and teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend those involved.

In a statement, the police said one juvenile has already been apprehended, while continuous raids are being carried out to nab the remaining accused.

“Sir, this is to inform you that a criminal case has been registered under the appropriate sections of law. Delhi Police teams are in constant touch with the victim and are providing all necessary assistance. Multiple teams have already been deployed to identify and apprehend the accused at the earliest,” Delhi Police said.

The police added that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible. “Delhi Police does not tolerate such incidents. Strict legal action will be taken against the culprits,” it said.
