CMJ University asked to cease all activities

Shillong, Feb 15: A day after Supreme Court’s directive to dissolve the tainted Chander Mohan Jha (CMJ) University, a team of senior government officials visited the university campus to secure the area at Jorabat in Ri-Bhoi district.

The three-member team accompanied by executive magistrate of Ri-Bhoi along with police personnel interacted with the vice-chancellor and registrar of CMJ University.

The VC and registrar were informed that in view of the Supreme Court order the University should cease all financial transactions, administrative and academic activities.

The University has also been directed to ensure that no assets, including files, computers, hard disks, or other materials should be removed from the campus.

Meanwhile, the state government will appoint an Administrator for CMJ University, which the government decided to close down in 2014, following revelations of mismanagement and other shortcomings by the institution.

The Supreme Court has already allowed the state government to take appropriate measures following its decision.

The Meghalaya government, the court said, had provided CMJ university ample opportunities to rectification of its violations.

The court found that the Meghalaya High Court was “fully justified” in quashing and setting aside the order dated July 16, 2015 passed by a single judge, who invalidated the dissolution order.

The university, founded in 2009, awarded a record number of 434 PhD degrees between 2012 and 2013 aside from registering 490 more PhD scholars in violation of the UGC norms.
