Coal mine tragedy: Death toll rises to 31

Shillong, Feb 11: The death toll in the coal mine explosion at Mynsyngat-Thangsko area of East Jaintia Hills district has risen to 31. Ten others were injured in the incident.

“The death toll has risen to 31 and 10 injured,” the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

An underground explosion of dynamite, used to extract coal, inside an illegal mine on February 5 caused the major mishap.

The tragedy prompted rescue operations involving multiple agencies for days together.

It has also led to the government authorities gearing up to take swift action against illegal mining activities in the region.
