‘Congress to strengthen Sixth Schedule’

Shillong, Feb 2: Congress candidate from Mawphlang-Diengiei constituency George Clarence Sunn on Saturday said his party, if voted to power, would take necessary steps to bring in laws to further strengthen the protection of indigenous people.

Recalling Congress’ contributions to the people of the state, he said, “It was through the party that we got Meghalaya statehood and the Sixth Schedule.”

“If voted to KHADC, I assure the people to take steps to further strengthen the Sixth Schedule and also the existing laws of the council for the protection of the indigenous people and their land,” Sunn said after filing his nomination papers at ISBT, Mawiong here.

He also underscored the importance of making the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation more effective to protect the trade and commerce of the tribal people and to check revenue leakages besides further empowering the traditional institutions.
