Shillong, Feb 17: NPP chief and chief minister Conrad K Sangma has advocated for a “good and capable leader” to represent the people living along India-Bangladesh border who face numerous challenges.
Addressing an election campaign meeting in Shella constituency under Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Sangma said, “This KHADC election provides an opportunity for the people of Shella constituency to elect a leader who will serve as their voice and bridge the gap between them and the government.”
After listing to the various issues raised by different speakers at the meeting at Dalia, the NPP chief urged the people to vote for the NPP candidate Ethan Kharpuri, saying, “To resolve these problems, we need a good leader — one who understands our difficulties and is capable of addressing them.”
Informing about the several schemes and grants provided to the people of Shella and other border areas, he reminded the electorate of his earlier promise to connect Shella with Sohra through an all-weather road, which has now been completed.
He also asserted his government’s commitment towards ensuring inclusive and holistic development for all communities.
“The growth of the state depends on the well-being of its people. We believe in our people and are dedicated to addressing their issues, whether in education, healthcare, or infrastructure development,” he added.
Speaking on the challenges faced in obtaining voter ID cards, particularly in border areas, he stated that the NPP government has resolved the issue. “We believe that our people, wherever they reside, should have access to the rights and privileges of this country,” he said.
Addressing criticism from opposition political parties, the chief minister remarked that despite their opposition, they still require NPP-led government’s intervention when it comes to development or solving issues.
“Do not be afraid of those political parties who speak against us. We are in the ruling government, and after the election, all parties will rely on the NPP to resolve their concerns. Respond to them with your votes and let them know that we are not intimidated by their statements,” the chief minister said.
On the advantage of having political stability – full majority government after 50 years in Meghalaya – in the state, he said, “NPP has made history securing 32 MLAs… We do not need the support of other political parties.”
However, he said, “We remain committed to our coalition partners. A true leader never abandons his people.”
