CM urges athletes to prepare for medals in National Games 2027
Shillong, Feb 15: NPP chief and chief minister Conrad K Sangma has cautioned voters against falling prey to “communal politics” allegedly played by opposition parties ahead of the autonomous district council (ADC) elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
“Many political parties are trying to play communal politics. They are trying to divide our people. We have to unite and vote for NPP to give a befitting response to parties trying to spread hate and mistrust,” he said during his campaign in Jirang constituency for party candidate Sosthenes Sohtun.
“NPP is a secular party and has been working for inclusive development,” he said.

Asserting that Meghalaya is known for its peace loving citizens, he said, “As our MLA, Sohtun has played a very constructive role and ensured many development interventions in the constituency in the past seven years. It is now imperative that we vote for him as MDC to allow him to work with the government to strengthen the district council.”
Lauding Sohtun for his leadership and his commitment to work for the people, the NPP chief said, “He will always voice for any issue related to border dispute and law and order situation that arise and seek government’s intervention.”
He admitted that there are problems at different levels, and also maintained that ADCs play very important role to initiate dialogue, consultation and safeguard the interest of tribal communities.
“The wave of NPP is very strong in all the five constituencies of Ri-Bhoi. People of the district have shown their faith in the leadership of the party and we are confident that the Council election result will be in favour of NPP,” he added.

Expressing his confidence over winning both KHADC and JHADC elections, Sangma said, “Many sitting MLAs from other political parties are speaking against their own parties. They are confused, and have lost faith in their party leadership.”
“It is clear indication that they have accepted defeat and even saying in many areas that people should come out and vote for NPP,” he added.
Informing that the 39th National Games 2027 will be held in Meghalaya, he said it’s a proud moment for the state. “We never imagined that National Games will be held in the state. But today the Indian Olympic Association and Govt of India is confident in our vision to promote sports in the state.”
“The NPP led government is creating an ecosystem for sports, building infrastructure and is providing training to athletes,” he said while adding that in next two years Meghalaya will put up robust sport infrastructure to hold the prestigious National Games spread across Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills.

He also informed that sports infrastructure will not only be built in Shillong, Jowai and Tura, but also in interior and rural areas.
“As per the Meghalaya Sports Policy, we will provide government jobs to the medallists of National Games. I would also like to inform that athletes from the state should prepare well and win medals in 2027 National Games and avail the opportunity to get government jobs,” he added.
He urged the youth to be prepared and win medals for the state and government will take care of them.
