Shillong, August 18: Giving an opportunity for the youth to ignite their potential towards a future driven by innovation and curiosity, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inaugurated the STEM Fusion Workshop and Student Exhibition- a dynamic initiative by the North East Centre For Technology Application and Research (NECTAR) and Smart Village Movement, in collaboration with IISER Pune, at the State Convention Centre in Shillong.

Addressing the young minds of the state eager to prove their potential, the Chief Minister shared his experience as a student, saying, “Science and Mathematics were often surrounded by too much seriousness, making them less enjoyable. This sentiment likely persists for many students today, which is unfortunate.” He emphasized the need to make Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) engaging and fun to spark curiosity and enthusiasm among students. “This workshop is a step toward transforming how children perceive STEM,” he added.
To give more access to such initiatives of learning, the chief minister proposed increasing the number of STEM labs and introducing mobile “Lab on Wheels” units to touch the student population, particularly in rural areas. He highlighted the success of similar efforts under the Smart Village program, noting the excitement it has generated among children.
The chief minister also urged the Education Department to integrate mandatory STEM-focused events, such as Science and Maths competitions, into school calendars, culminating in state-level contests.
Stressing the importance of collaboration, the Chief Minister said, “We cannot work in silos. Success depends on stakeholders in the ecosystem connecting and working together.” He called on the Education Department, NECTAR, entrepreneurs, and other partners to create more STEM labs, especially at the grassroots level.

Encouraging innovation among students, the chief minister announced cash prizes for the Science Exhibition: ₹2 lakhs for first place, ₹1 lakh for second, ₹50,000 for third, and ₹10,000 for each participating school or group, sending excitement across the room. He also revealed that the government would fund selected innovative student projects, further motivating young innovators.
Several notable figures also participated and addressed the gathering, including Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar, NECTAR Director General Arun Kumar Sharma, Vivek Shah from Smart Village Movement, Dr. S Muthu Kumaran, Head of Metallurgical and Mineral Engineering at NIT, and the Director of Education, Government of Meghalaya.
