DC urges public not to fall prey to false info on Megong Festival

Tura, Nov 13: In the light of superstitious stories and false narratives on the new venue for the upcoming Megong Festival, the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Aggarwal, has issued a public appeal urging citizens to refrain from spreading false and unverified information circulating on social media regarding the venue of the upcoming 5th Edition of the Megong Festival 2025, which is scheduled to be held at Bolbokgre and Watregre under Jengjal (Civil) Sub-Division, West Garo Hills.

“It has come to the notice of the district administration that certain misleading messages are being circulated online, alleging that the festival venue poses a threat to people’s lives due to traditional beliefs and that four construction workers have died at the site. These claims are completely false and baseless, and such misinformation can cause unnecessary panic among the public and hurt the sentiments of the local communities of Bolbokgre and Watregre,” DC Agarwal stated.

Aggarwal further informed that the district administration, in collaboration with relevant government departments and festival organizers, is taking all necessary measures and precautions to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the festival.

Appealing to the public, the Deputy Commissioner urged everyone not to spread unverified or misleading information that could lead to panic and unrest. He also cautioned that individuals spreading false information may face legal action under relevant provisions of the law.

He called upon all citizens to act responsibly, refrain from sharing misinformation, and extend full cooperation and support towards the successful organization of the Megong Festival 2025.

The Deputy Commissioner expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation of the people of West Garo Hills in maintaining peace and supporting the district administration’s efforts.
