Shillong, Feb 11: Muster roll workers of Meghalaya have expressed resentment over alleged inaction of the state government to implement Labour Code 2025 that would provide social security benefits to daily wage workers.
“We are surprised that since November 2025, the state government of Meghalaya has not given any notification to implement the labour code in Meghalaya,” K Pariat, chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Muster Roll Labour Union, told reporters on Wednesday.
Stating that the JAC had taken up the issue of Labour Code with the Labour department, he said, “They informed us that they are in the process of making the state rules, but despite lapse of more than six months, they are yet to implement it.”
“This is very disappointing since muster roll are working on a daily basis but the Labour department and the government of Meghalaya are taking things very lightly,” he said.
The Labour Code 2025, directed by the Government of India, promises benefits such as pension, employee provident fund, and social security for workers.
However, the state government is yet to implement it, despite repeated memoranda from the union.
The JAC chairman emphasized that the government’s inaction is affecting the livelihood of muster roll workers, who are struggling with inflation and high prices of essential commodities.
The Union has also raised concerns over the non-implementation of the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and the lack of notification on the consumer price index, despite the Government of India slashing GST rates on essential commodities.
“One egg costs us Rs 10, and daal is Rs 100 per kg, which is higher than other states,” Pariat said, highlighting the impact on workers’ lives.
The Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, had invited the Union for talks, but there’s been no response so far, he said.
