Tura, Aug 21: The long-standing demand to declare Tura, the hub of the Garo Hills region in Meghalaya, as the winter capital of the state has gained renewed momentum as leaders from the A•chik Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) have urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to initiate discussions on this matter.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, through the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, ACHIK emphasized that the Chief Minister’s office had previously assured the organization that discussions would begin.
The ACHIK stated assurance was made to initiate discussions during a meeting held last year at the Chief Minister’s Mini Secretariat in Tura. Additionally, this commitment was publicly reiterated through various media outlets.
The ACHIK emphasized that the demand to establish Tura as the winter capital of Meghalaya is a longstanding one, deeply significant to the Garo community. The organization believes that designating Tura as the winter capital would bring numerous benefits, including enhanced administrative efficiency and more balanced development across the state.
ACHIK had staged a 14-day hunger strike in July 2023 in Tura to press for the demand to establish Tura as the winter capital of Meghalaya.
