Dhar welcomes ‘anybody’ to contest from Nartiang

Shillong, Jan 30: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has welcomed “anybody” to contest from his Nartiang constituency in the 2028 assembly elections.

The four-time Nartiang legislator was responding to speculations that VPP president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit will be in the race from Nartiang in the next election.

“Anybody is welcome, no problem. It is open for anyone even from outside the constituency to contest, no problem… Congress, VPP, BJP, UDP can contest… There is no problem at all,” Dhar told reporters on Friday.

On the possibility of Basaiawmoit contesting from Nartiang, Dhar said, “If he comes to contest, I fear that Nongkrem will not accept him back anymore. You will never know.”

Highlighting development work in his constituency, he said, “I don’t need to explain the development happening in my constituency, you and everyone has seen it. I am not saying I have fulfilled what the people wanted but I am trying my best – that is my part as a local MLA.”

The deputy chief minister also expressed confidence in the electorate, stating, “The people of Nartiang constituency have elected the same MLA for the four consecutive times… They are not like Nongkrem (electorate) who change their MLA every five years.”
