Diwali celebration turns sour, 2 youths dead in midnight accident at Khanapara

Guwahati, Nov 1: In a tragic accident near the Khanapara foot overbridge in Guwahati, two young people lost their lives, and two others were seriously injured early Friday morning.

The collision involved two Mahindra Scorpio vehicles, with the accident occurring around 3:40 a.m. when first white-coloured Scorpio (registration number AS01EG-0820) attempted a U-turn near the footbridge and moved towards the Science Museum. Another black-coloured Scorpio (registration number AS01GB-6269), approaching from Ganeshguri side, crashed into the first vehicle.

The first Scorpior was proceeding towards Khanapara, while the second black Scorpio vehicle was coming from the opposite side.

The impact caused the second vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Deeepit Dey, to lose control, strike the foot overbridge, break through its railing, and overturn onto the road. Both Dey and his friend Kunamika Narzary, aged 19, died instantly. Another passenger, 19-year-old Niharika Basumatary, narrowly survived but sustained severe injuries.

The collision reduced the second vehicle to a mangled heap of metal, with the crash dampening Diwali celebrations in the city.

The occupants of the second vehicle had reportedly been at a nearby bar, as indicated by entry bands still on their wrists.

Deeepit Dey, is the son of a medicine dealer from Christianbasti, and his friend Kunamika Narzary is a resident of Joraguri in Kokrajhar district. Niharika Basumatary, a 19-year-old from Gohpur in Sonitpur district.

The black Mahindra Scorpio they were travelling in had been purchased on Tuesday. According to sources, the group had been to a bar in Jorabat for a party and took a trip outside Guwahati before the accident happened on their way back.
