Mondal assures to address concerns, urges locals to allow Mawpat block to function
Shillong, July 21: Scheduled inauguration of the Block Integrated Development Complex at Mawpat here had to be cancelled due to a protest over government’s “failed promise” to provide jobs to local people.
The locals led by the Dorbar Shnong prevented community & rural development minister AT Mondal and animal husbandry & veterinary minister AL Hek, also a local MLA, to enter the Block premises while shouting anti-government slogans and waving of black flags.

According to the protesters, the government failed to honour an agreement signed when locals donated land for the complex, promising job appointments for residents of Mawpat and adequate funding for the block to ensure its effective functioning.
They also alleged that casual and contractual employees were paid meagre salaries, ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 and the government has failed to implement minimum wages.
Meanwhile, Mondal has assured to address the issues raised by the Dorbar Shnong.
He said the Block is meant to serve the people and that the government is committed to fulfilling the agreements signed with the local people.
Urging the locals to allow the Block to function and give time to the government to address their concerns.
He also invited the Dorbar Shnong for discussion on the issues and find solutions.
However, the Dorbar Shnong has demanded a written assurance from the government before they agree to cooperate.

On the other hand, Hek expressed concern over the protest and stated that the Dorbar Shnong should have approached him earlier with their grievances.
The local MLA also said the Dorbar Shnong never informed him about the employees not paid the minimum wages.
Mawpat village headman Judah Wahlang said the Dorbar Shnong has demanded the government to respect the people sentiment and rectify these issues immediately.
