Drug traffickers attempt destruction of evidence during police chase in Garo Hills

Tura, Feb 13: A gang of drug peddlers smuggling in narcotics into West Garo Hills made a desperate attempt to destroy the consignment during a hot chase by police in the Selsella region on Wednesday night. All four traffickers were nabbed and a substantial number of narcotics were recovered from their possession.

The operation led by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of West Garo Hills police had received a tip-off that a drug smuggling gang was heading into Garo Hills with narcotics from Assam in a vehicle. The ANTF promptly mobilized and set up an interception point at Balachanda, under the jurisdiction of the Selsella Outpost.

As the suspected vehicle approached, the occupants, upon spotting the police team, attempted to destroy the evidence and flee the scene. In a desperate move, they deliberately scattered psychotropic substances outside the vehicle in an effort to evade capture. A hot chase began and police vehicles managed to overtake and block the road ensuring that the suspects were apprehended before they could escape.

During a thorough body search, the police recovered 11 vials containing psychotropic substances and 6 insulin syringes from the suspects. The seized items are believed to be part of a larger drug trafficking network operating in the region.

The four individuals arrested in connection with the case have been identified as:
Toseng R Sangma, 26 years old, from Baghmara, South Garo Hills (SGH).
Rakkan R. Marak, 27 years old, from Bajengdoba, North Garo Hills (NGH).
Sanchubirth S Marak, 22 years old, from Williamnagar, East Garo Hills (EGH), and
Safik Alam, 21 years old, from New Bhaitbari, West Garo Hills.

The arrested individuals have been charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and are currently in police custody. Further investigations are underway to uncover the broader network and supply chain involved in this illicit operation.

Speaking on the operation, a senior police official commended the ANTF team for their prompt action and vigilance. “This successful interception is a testament to the dedication of our forces in curbing the drug menace in the region. We will continue to take stringent action against those involved in such illegal activities,” the official stated.

The incident has once again brought to light the ongoing challenges posed by drug trafficking in the region and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public. The ANTF has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to help combat the spread of narcotics and ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
