Durga Puja: Traffic curbs announced in Shillong

No parking/halting within a 100-m radius of puja pandals

Shillong, Oct 17: The Shillong Traffic Police has announced stringent traffic regulations for the Durga Puja festivities scheduled from October 17 to 20, culminating with the idol immersion procession on October 21.

A statement issued by Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Dr Hari Prasamth M R on Friday said the measures have been put in place in anticipation of heavy vehicular and pedestrian movement across the city during the festive period.

As per the advisory, sector-wise no entry restrictions will be enforced along with designated no parking zones to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

The police have also prohibited parking and halting of vehicles within a 100-metre radius of puja pandals across Shillong.

The release warned that any violation will attract strict action including challaning, clamping and removal of vehicles under relevant provisions of law.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Shillong Traffic Police has asked citizens and visitors to go through the detailed advisory enclosed with the release, plan their travel in advance, opt for alternative routes to avoid congestion and use only authorised parking facilities while adhering to all traffic instructions.

For any traffic-related assistance or clarification during the Puja days, the public can reach out to the Shillong Traffic Police through its seven traffic branches in Sadar, Laitumkhrah, Madanrting, Lumdiengjri, Rynjah, Laban and Mawlai. The police emergency helpline 112 will also remain active.

The department assured that emergency vehicles including ambulances and fire tenders will be given priority passage and will be duly facilitated.

Seeking cooperation from all to ensure safe and hassle-free celebrations, the SP (Traffic) said any inconvenience caused due to the restrictions is highly regretted.
