Shillong, Sept 28: The statistics of HIV/AIDS and cancer prevalence in Meghalaya is worse than national average, but early diagnosis and prevention rather than worry is the way ahead.
“We should not be afraid. The government and the Health department are always there to look after and ensure that we reduce this figure,” said Mayralborn Syiem, Adviser to the Health department, on Monday.
The Nongpoh MLA was referring to alarming HIV/AIDS figures in East Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
“HIV/AIDS is a concern and it is a fact that our figures are more than the national average. I would like to appeal to fellow citizens to come forward, get tested and get treated,” Syiem said.
He also raised alarm over cancer prevalence in the state.
“Not only HIV, cancer is also one of the most prevalent diseases we have nowadays. As per record, deaths due to cancer among males, we are second in the country, and among females, we are number 11,” Syiem said.
He said late detection due to negligence of early symptoms is worsening the situation.
“In the beginning, we take the symptoms lightly. Most citizens don’t take it seriously. My humble appeal is to come forward and get tested for cancer also,” he said.
Syiem said the Meghalaya State Cancer Society is holding screening camps across Ri-Bhoi to promote early detection.
“Last time we had a programme in Madan Pahamsyiem. In the coming days, it will be held in Umsning, Bhoirymbong, Mawhati, Patharkhmah, Byrnihat and other places where the Society will conduct testing and specialists and doctors will advise citizens accordingly,” he added.
