East Khasi Hills DC issues advisory for POL tanker transport

Shillong, May 20: In view of safety and security concerns, the East Khasi Hills district administration has issued a detailed advisory for the public on precautions to be taken during the transportation of POL tankers.

The advisory, issued by the Deputy Commissioner & Chairperson, DDMA, East Khasi Hills District on Wednesday lays down specific “Do’s” and “Don’ts” for motorists and residents.

While travelling on roads, the DC has asked the public to maintain a safe distance from POL tankers while driving or riding, overtake tankers cautiously, and avoid sudden braking near them.

Motorists have also been directed to follow traffic rules and speed limits near fuel tankers, allow adequate space for tanker turning and maneuvering, and stay alert on highways, especially during rain, fog or night travel.

If notice a tanker leak or accident, the advisory instructs people to immediately move away from the area, warn nearby people to stay clear, and inform emergency services by calling 112, Fire & Emergency Services, or the Police Control Room.

It further advises citizens to inform district authorities, if possible, move upwind from the accident site to avoid inhaling fumes, and follow instructions issued by police, fire services and district administration.

During fire or explosion risk, the public has been told to evacuate the area immediately, switch off vehicle engines nearby, and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.

The advisory also calls on residents to assist elderly persons, children and persons with disabilities to move to safety and to cooperate with evacuation orders issued by authorities.

Under “don’ts”, the administration has cautioned against smoking, using open flames, or bursting crackers near POL tankers. It also warns the public not to use mobile phones very close to a leaking tanker, not to touch spilled fuel or leaking material, and not to crowd around accident sites.

The advisory specifically prohibits any attempt to siphon or collect leaked fuel and warns against obstructing emergency responders.

The advisory has been issued for strict compliance by the public to prevent accidents and ensure safety during the movement of fuel tankers in the district.
