Eight Bangladeshi nationals detained in Garo Hills, live snakes seized

Tura, Jan 24: Police in West Garo Hills have detained as many as eight suspected Bangladeshi Nationals from the plain belt town of Hallidayganj and also seized two live snakes from their possession early this morning.

The men reportedly crossed the border illegally at Dalu before travelling on Garo Hills roads to Hallidayganj town, a muslim majority town close to the border with Assam, from where they had intended to cross into the neighbouring state.

The suspects were detained in an early morning operation by Hallidayganj police and during search of the group’s possessions  recovered the two live snakes.

Among the eight detained illegal immigrants include two women, Miss Dalia Ojha and Miss Jhorina.

The men have veen identified as Pappu Sheikh (27 yrs), Alif Mal (39 yrs), Masirul Ojha (18yrs), Arif Sheikh (37 yrs), Maherul Khan (19yrs) and Alif Mondol (35yrs).

They claimed to have entered India illegally through Dalu and previously stayed in Mitapukur, Bangladesh and Sabar, Habra, Bangladesh.

Garo Hills police have registered cases under the Foreigners Act and Passport Act, and the seized snakes have been handed over to Wildlife officials.
