Empowering Communities Through Awareness: South West Garo Hills Celebrates 10 Years of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Ampati, February 13: As part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) 10-year celebration campaign, the Department of Social Welfare and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), in collaboration with Krima No.VI Youth Ministry, organized an awareness program at Borang Resort, Nogorpara on Thursday. The event, which runs from January 22, 2025, to March 8, 2025, aims to reinforce the scheme’s mission of empowering girls through education and protection.

The program witnessed the participation of pastors from 8 churches, 350 youth, and district officials, highlighting the collective commitment toward gender equality and social well-being.

Creating awareness for a stronger society, the event focused on multiple social issues affecting women and children, with expert-led sessions: BBBP Scheme Awareness was conducted by Chairy R Marak, Gender Specialist, DHEW, to educate participants on the scheme’s objectives and impact. Mental Health Awareness was led by Lenibell Dokatchi Marak, Clinical Psychologist, Ampati Civil Hospital, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being in community development. POCSO Act Awareness was presented by Taniya Derimchi Marak, LCPO, to inform participants about child protection laws and legal recourse. Domestic Violence Awareness was explained by Beggimme Sangma, Case Worker, highlighting support systems for victims and legal protections.

In addition to these sessions, a quiz competition and sports events were organized to engage the youth in an interactive manner. Rev. Paramsingh Sangma and Taniya Derimchi Marak distributed prizes to the winners, encouraging active participation in learning and advocacy.

The celebration of 10 years of BBBP is not just a milestone but a reminder of the collective responsibility to build an inclusive society where girls and women can thrive.

The event reinforced the significance of the BBBP scheme in fostering a progressive and inclusive society. By engaging youth, religious leaders, and officials, the event amplified the message of gender equity and protection, ensuring that every girl child is valued, educated, and safe. The program created a collaborative platform to address gender disparities, promote education for girls, and raise awareness about critical social issues.

Such initiatives are vital in ensuring that every girl child receives equal opportunities, protection, and support. The South West Garo Hills administration remains committed to strengthening community engagement and driving meaningful change through continued awareness and action.
