Field day for Ri Bhoi farmers

Rice cultivators learn about benefits of Zinc-fortified paddy varieties 

Shillong, Nov 15: Farmers of Mawbri Village in Ri Bhoi were provided a comprehensive understanding of the Zinc-rich biofortified variety of paddy during a field day organised by KVK, Ri Bhoi ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on Thursday.

A total of 30 farmers gathered at the field of Banrilin Nongklaw at Mawbri village along with SMS, SRF, NICRA, Project Assistant, FPO from KVK, ICAR Complex and village headman to learn about the performance of Zinc-rich biofortified variety which is found to be suitable for cultivation under lower hills and ensure better health to human and an animal populations.

The yield potential indicates a future possibility of area expansion and adoption of such promising varieties under Ri Bhoi. 

Dr. Meghna Sarma, SMS, Agronomy, KVK, Ri Bhoi informed the farmers about the role of Zinc-fortified paddy varieties in eradicating malnutrition for a hunger-free society and encouraged them to adopt such variety for the next coming season for improvement of livelihood of farming community. 

Meanwhile, Dr Moloy Sarma, SMS, Animal Science KVK, Ri Bhoi emphasised on the use of quality seeds, improved varieties and scientific paddy cultivation practices for  doubling farmers income  The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Samuel Klein, Project Assistant, FPO,ICAR,KVK, Ri Bhoi.
