Shillong, July 19: In an exciting development for football fans among the student community, the state government has declared Monday a holiday for all schools and colleges across the state to allow them watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final late Sunday night.
The decision was announced through a video message by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

“Government has decided to declare a holiday for all educational institutions in Meghalaya, including schools and colleges. Enjoy the finals… Who are you supporting?” Sangma said expressing his deep passion for the game in his social media post on Sunday.
The decision means students need not worry about their classes next day and remain awake till early Monday morning when the final between defending champion Argentina and Spain will be over.
Football enjoys a near-religious following in Meghalaya, and the government’s decision is expected to be welcomed by thousands of students eager to watch the biggest match of the tournament.
