Shillong, Aug 4: An entire family of five members lost their lives in a tragic mishap as a Maruti Alto car they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a 70-foot-deep gorge at Rngain, Pynursla in East Khasi Hills late Sunday night.
Heavy landslide, triggered by continuous rainfall and fog in the area, may have caused the driver to lose control, leading to the fatal mishap, according to the police.
A rescue police rescue team reached the site early Monday morning to retrieve the bodies and the wrecked vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as — Alida Marbaniang (65) – the mother, Meban Ador Marbaniang (28) – son, Aimiki Marbaniang (23) – son, Risbun Kurbah (22) – (wife of Meban Ador) and Damebanshngain Kurbah (1.5 years) – daughter.
The family hailed from Lyngkyrdem village in Laitlyting, East Khasi Hills.
