Flag-off ceremony for NE mine safety week held

Shillong, Oct 6: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited hosted the flag-off ceremony for the 23rd North East Metalliferous Mine Safety Week–2026 at its mining operations in Meghalaya’s Lumshnong in East Khasi Hills and Assam’s Dima Hasao.

Organised under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Guwahati Region, the week-long programme, being held from October 4 to 10, 2026, will see three inspection teams visit participating mines across Assam and Meghalaya to assess safety practices and identify areas for further improvement.

The exercise goes beyond compliance, creating an opportunity for mines to benchmark their practices, exchange learnings and reinforce a culture of continuous vigilance and improvement in mining operations.

The annual initiative brings the mining industry together to strengthen safety standards through inspections, peer learning, evaluation and the sharing of good practices. The ceremony, held in hybrid mode, was attended by around 50 mining heads and officials representing 17 opencast mines from the organised sector across Assam and Meghalaya.

At the New Umrangso Limestone Mine in Assam, the flag-off ceremony was attended by B. Dayasagar, Director of Mines Safety, Guwahati Region; Ambuj Srivastava, Unit Head; Anil Kumar Ganapurapuwar, HOD – Mines, Dalmia Cement (NE) Limited, along with mine officials and representatives from participating mines.

Meanwhile at DCBL Mine Block III, IV & V, Lumshnong, the ceremony was attended by K. Prem Kumar, DDMS; Kamlesh Kumar Verma, DDMS; Pankaj Gupta, Unit Head; Hemant Sharma, HOD – Mines, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited, along with other mine officials and representatives from participating mines.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambuj Srivastava, Unit Head, Dalmia Cement (NE) Limited, said, “It is a privilege to host the flag-off of the 23rd Northeast Metalliferous Mine Safety Week and welcome mining professionals from across Assam and Meghalaya. Safety in mining is a shared responsibility, and initiatives such as this provide an important opportunity for the industry to come together, learn from one another and continuously raise the bar on safe operating practices. We hope the week encourages open exchange of ideas, greater awareness and practical learnings that can contribute to safer mining operations across the region.”
