Floods at Lachumiere: Urban Affairs dept asked to find solution soon

Shillong, Apr 10: The problem artificial flooding in Lachumiere locality has drawn the government attention as cabinet minister and NPP legislator from East Shillong constituency Ampareen Lyngdoh along Urban Affairs department officials and locality leaders conducted an inspection at the locality on Wednesday.

As heavy rains on Wednesday flooded the area raising concern over worse days in the coming rainy season, she asked the officials to look into the problem and find a solution within next 20 days.

Stating that completion of All Saints’ Road behind All Saints’ School and subsequent management of the drain is a big cause of concern in the event of heavy rainfall, she also underlined the need for expansion of the drain behind Sylvan House going to Wah Pomdngiem river.

The Urban Affairs department needs to immediately attend this problem as floods can pose severe threat to citizens living along Sylvan House stretch including central Lachumiere, she said.

Meanwhile, after a review of traffic arrangement in and around Lachumiere Hill, she disclosed about a master plan to ease traffic congestion in and around Shillong city.

She expressed the hope that after shifting all administrative offices to New Shillong City, the citizens in the city will get some respite from severe traffic jams.
