Former Meghalaya DGP passes away

Shillong, Jan 20: Former Director General of Police, Meghalaya, W R Marbaniang has passed away in Shillong today. He was 75.

Fondly known as Bill Richmond, Marbaniang served in various state police posts, from Commandant to DIG, IGP before taking over the police force as DGP. He was on active duty at the height of the HNLC and ANVC militant era and later went on to serve as the Director General of the Meghalaya Home Guards. He also played an active role in the establishment of the first police battalion in Garo Hills- the 2nd MLP Battalion at Goeragre, 14 kms from Tura, and was one of the first officers to take command of the Battalion at its nascent stage.

He had been ailing for sometime and had undergone medical treatment at a city hospital but passed away following complications. His son William Richmond Basaiawmoit is one of the 11 singers from the Shillong Chamber Choir.
