Fresh landslide paralyzes Lumding-Badarpur route, hundreds stranded on Silchar-Guwahati Express

Guwahati, July 3: Just four days after rail services resumed on the Lumding-Badarpur hill section, fresh landslides at Mupa have forced a complete suspension of train operations, again severing the vital rail link between Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.

According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the Silchar-Guwahati Express (Train No. 15616) came to an abrupt halt early Thursday at Mupa Station, as a massive landslide between Mupa and Dihakho stations buried the tracks under boulders and debris. Passengers were stranded in rain-soaked, remote terrain, as rail movement came to an immediate standstill.

NFR spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed the disruption and said restoration efforts were already underway. “Senior officials have reached the site. The track has been suspended until the debris is cleared. If weather permits, services may resume within hours,” Sharma said.

The landslide occurred at kilometre mark 51/2-3, a known vulnerable stretch in the monsoon-prone hill section. The incident highlights the fragile nature of transport infrastructure in the region, where repeated landslides during rains have severely impacted connectivity and raised urgent calls for geological surveys and permanent mitigation measures.

The trains that were cancelled due to the landslide are: 15615 Guwahati–Silchar Express (July 3), 15611 Rangiya–Silchar Express (July 3), 15612 Silchar–Rangiya Express (July 3), 05628 Agartala–Guwahati Special (July 3) and 05627 Guwahati–Agartala Special (July 4).

Some major trains were partially cancelled, rescheduled, or regulated. 15618 Dullabhcherra–Guwahati Express (July 3) was partially cancelled between New Haflong and Guwahati.

12508 Silchar–Thiruvananthapuram Express (July 3) has been rescheduled to depart at 8 AM on July 4.

13174 Sabroom–Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express (July 3) is returning to New Haflong from Mahur.

12520 Agartala–LTT Express (July 3) has been regulated at New Haflong.

14619 Tripura Sundari Express (July 3) is returning to Agartala from Dharmanagar.

13173 Sealdah–Sabroom Kanchanjunga Express (July 3) has been regulated at Lumding.

20502 Anand Vihar (T)–Agartala Tejas Rajdhani (July 2) has been regulated at Guwahati.

12503 SMVT Bengaluru–Agartala Express (July 1) has been regulated at Guwahati.

Help desks have been set up at Guwahati, Lumding, Silchar, Badarpur, and Agartala stations to assist passengers.
