G7 Summit: CM hails PM Modi for display of Lakadong turmeric

Shillong, June 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the display of Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric during G7 Summit held in France recently.

Sangma said the gesture brought global attention to the state’s rich agricultural heritage and the efforts of its farmers.

“Thank you, Hon’ble Prime Minister, for showcasing Meghalaya’s golden spice to the world and highlighting the rich agricultural heritage and potential of our farmers,” the chief minister posted on X.

He said the internationally acclaimed spice from Meghalaya had found a place on the world stage after being presented by the prime minister to global leaders.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also welcomed the recognition, posting on X that Lakadong turmeric’s presence at the G7 Summit reflected the growing global appreciation for premium products from India’s Northeast and underscored the potential of Meghalaya’s farming community.

Lakadong turmeric, cultivated mainly by women in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, is prized for its exceptionally high curcumin content and has earned Geographical Indication (GI) status, making it one of the state’s most celebrated agricultural products.
