Garo groups rally for arrest of absconding rapist

Tura, Sept 3: Members of several organizations and women groups from Garobadha town in West Garo Hills staged a public rally on Monday to protest against the delay in arresting an accused rapist who has been absconding for over a month.

A trader from the town, approximately 30 kms from Tura, was accused of sexual crimes against a minor girl inside his store, but fled after members of local organizations raided his place, a few weeks ago.

Members of GSU, AYWO, FKJGP, ADE, AHAM and Adil together with the womenfolk of Garobadha marched through the main thoroughfares of the town, despite a downpour, to register their anger over the delay in nabbing the accused.

Shouting slogans as they marched with banners and placards, they asked, “Why is the law slow in catching up with perpetrators of crime, especially sexual crimes.”

The protestors are demanding the early implementation of the Meghalaya Residence Safety and Security Act, 2017 that aims to become an important tool to check against crimes.

They also want concerned departments in the state, including the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, to do a proper inspection of licenses for Trading by Non-Tribals (TNT) who enter the region for trade.
