Tura, Sept 21: Garo Hills is bracing for two nights of restrictions with several pressure groups from the region calling for a “Non-Cooperation Movement” from 9 PM to 5 AM on September 22nd and 23rd. This has prompted authorities to impose Section 144 CrPC in the interest of public safety.

West Garo Hills district magistrate Vibhor Agarwal has on Sunday promulgated Section 144 that restricts unlawful assembly of five or more persons, carrying of weapons and any activity that tantamount to disturbing public order. The order has come into effect from today itself.

The prohibitory order will remain in force until further notice, and strict action will be taken against violators under the relevant provisions of law, announced the district magistrate.

For public awareness, residents have been urged to stay informed through official notifications and avoid spreading rumours or misinformation.

Several major student and social organizations from across Garo Hills have unitedly called for two nights of  “Public imposed curfew” to oppose the PPP Mode for the Tura Medical College, and also to protest the failure of the concerned authorities to clear more than 43 months of salaries for hundreds of employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

It is worth mentioning that the state government has been holding parlays with the protesting groups to put across the reasons for the PPP mode in the medical college, while the GHADC authorities have announced its readiness to immediately release 10 months of salaries with the remaining backlog to be cleared in a phased manner.
