Garo Hills remembers Captain Sangma on his 34th death anniversary

Tura/Baghmara, Oct 25: Rich floral tributes were paid to Meghalaya’s first chief minister Captain Williamson A Sangma on his 34th death anniversary with special remembrance programmes taking place in Tura and Baghmara- his birth place, on Friday morning.

In Baghmara, the district administration, in collaboration with the Ampang Mangsang Mahari (clan), jointly observed the commemorative event at the Captain Williamson Memorial Park, on the shores of the mighty Simsang river that flows down to Bangladesh.

Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma paid homage to Late Captain Sangma and called upon the youth to emulate his work for the people of the state.

The Chokpot MLA Sengchim N Sangma, in his address to the gathering, recalled the
multiple contributions made by the first state chief minister, particularly in the field of political history.

During the memorial service wreaths and garlands were placed on the statue of Capt
Williamson Sangma. To mark the occasion, Speaker Thomas A Sangma unveiled a plaque for the renaming of the road from Dilsa junction to Baghmara Main market as Captain Williamson Road.

In Tura, the family of Meghalaya’s first chief minister took part in a special service at a park dedicated to him, outside his home in Hawakhana. Organised by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council- where Captain Sangma was the first Chief Executive Member, Council leaders led by Deputy CEM Nikman Marak paid floral tributes
and fondly recalled the former leader’s rich contributions to the district council, the Garo Hills and Meghalaya state. They later paid a visit to his grave and placed floral wreaths.
