Garo villager killed in elephant attack

Tura, Jan 6: A 62 year old man has been killed after wild elephants attacked him outside his home in Rongsai area of West Garo Hills, early Monday morning.

The victim, identified as Harwit Marak was killed in the village of Kurung Saltop under Rongsai police outpost jurisdiction.


He had ventured outside his house when he came across a herd of wild elephants that was moving in the area in search of food.


Villagers alerted police of the incident and the body has been recovered. Elephant attacks are frequent during the winter months when food is scarce forcing the wild animals to venture into areas of human habitation.
