Guwahati, May 26: In a strategic move aimed at reviving its prospects in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Monday appointed Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi as the new president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

The decision marks a generational shift in the state unit’s leadership and comes at a time when the party is working to rebuild its base in Assam. Outgoing APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, who held the post since 2021, has been entrusted with leading the party’s Campaign Committee for the 2026 polls, recognizing his contribution during a challenging phase for the Congress in the state.

The appointments were announced through a press release by AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, who said the changes were made with “immediate effect” as part of an organizational revamp.

Alongside Gogoi, the party has named three working presidents to assist in leading the APCC – Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirky (relieved of her AICC Secretary responsibilities) and Pradip Sarkar.

The AICC also approved the formation of key committees for the state unit including the Coordination Committee, Manifesto Committee, Publicity Committee, and the Election Management Committee, as part of a full-scale preparation for the 2026 electoral battle.

Reacting to his appointment, Gogoi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leaders Rahul Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, and Jitendra Singh, and thanked Bhupen Kumar Borah for his leadership and support.

“I would not have been here without the guidance of my parents and the support of my family, especially my wife and children,” Gogoi wrote.

“It is a blessing to work with so many dedicated and inspiring senior leaders and workers in the Congress party in Assam. Their wisdom and dedication have taught me a lot.”

The three-time MP and son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi also said he would seek the blessings of the people of Assam in the days ahead and vowed to build a better future for the state.

“Joi Ai Axom! Jai Hind!” he signed off.

Gogoi’s appointment is seen as an effort to re-energize the party’s grassroots machinery, tap into youth leadership, and bring a renewed focus on issues affecting Assam. His national exposure and relatively clean political image may help the party reconnect with the electorate, especially urban and middle-class voters.

Congress insiders say the restructuring signals a more aggressive, campaign-oriented approach as the party seeks to challenge the BJP’s dominance in the state and revive its influence in Northeast politics.

With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, the Congress now has a new face at the helm, an experienced campaign head, and a defined organizational structure. Whether this revamp will translate into electoral momentum remains to be seen, but the party has made its intent clear: it’s preparing for a serious comeback in Assam.
