GHADC Budget Session: Council moves motion for Delimitation of GHADC constituencies

Tura, March 28: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council has moved a resolution seeking the delimitation of its 29 constituencies.

Chief Executive Member Albinush R Marak moved the motion during the special supplementary budget session of the council on Thursday. The council is seeking to raise the number of MDC seats from the current 29 to 40.

Currently, out of 30 MDCs in the GHADC, 29 are directly elected and one is nominated from the ruling side.

“Every elected member is in favour of the delimitation of constituencies because the area is vast in every constituency. We are of the view that the delimitation ought to increase from the current 29 to 40 MDC seats. Out of these, 36 will be a direct election and remaining four would be nominated members,” said CEM Albinush Marak.

Earlier, several MDCs from the ruling and the opposition participated in the delimitation debate highlighting the importance of an increase in the number of seats.

Opposition MDCs Cherak W Momin, Alphonsius Marak and Smt Sadhiarani M Sangma spoke on the need for delimitation, while from the ruling NPP alliance side CEM Albinush Marak, Deputy CEM Nikman Ch Marak and Nehru Marak spoke on the importance of the delimitation exercise.
