Shillong, Aug 8: Governor CH Vijayashankar held talks with the NCW chairperson on pressing social concerns in the state, focusing on rising drug abuse, increasing early pregnancies among adolescent girls, and the growing incidence of tuberculosis and HIV among women, at the Raj Bhavan on Friday.
The governor, while speaking with the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Vijaya Rahatkar, lauded the initiatives undertaken by the NCW to address such challenges and assured all possible support in furthering the cause of women’s welfare in Meghalaya.
The Governor stressed on the importance of coordinated efforts between government agencies, civil society, and community leaders to create awareness and strengthen preventive mechanisms.
Rahatkar expressed her deep concern over the vulnerabilities faced by young girls, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, and highlighted the need for sustained awareness campaigns, better access to healthcare, and targeted intervention programs.
She also reiterated NCW’s commitment to working closely with the state administration and local organizations to promote the rights, safety, and well-being of women and girls.
The visit concluded with a mutual resolve to intensify efforts towards creating a safer and healthier environment for women across the state.
