Govt approves proposal for promotion of LP teachers

Shillong, Jan 15: The state government has decided to change the promotion criteria of lower primary school teachers and assistant teachers to facilitate better promotion scope to the teachers.

“In the past service rules, there was very less scope for promotion when it comes to the LP school teachers and assistant teachers,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The Meghalaya School Service Rules, 2025 was approved in the cabinet to remove this bottleneck in promotion of the two categories of teachers, who had earlier remained stuck in certain positions for many years.

They can now be promoted up to the level of “Senior Teacher” at the time of retirement.

“There were limited scope for promotion, which created a bit of conflict between different sections in the education department,” he said.

“After deep consultations with various associations, the education department has amended the rules and this is going to pave way for a better scope of their promotion,” he added.
