Shillong, Sept 2: The state government has asked Advocate General Amit Kumar has been asked to refrain from appearing in court for two weeks while the government holds talks with lawyers, who resorted to indefinite boycott of courts demanding his removal.
The government directed the AG to stay away from court a day after holding a meeting between Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and two bar associations of Meghalaya.
The agitating lawyers flagged multiple grievances, including against the AG while the minister assured of action from the Law department.
“They are against the functioning of the Advocate General… they want his removal,” Rymbui said holding a second round of meeting with the association representatives on Wednesday.
The meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong was attended by both the bar associations at short notice.
He said appointment of AG being a constitutional matter has to be decided by the Council of Ministers, but as an interim measure, the government will request the AG not to appear.
“We will request the AG that in these two weeks he will not appear in the case… a one week we will again meet regarding all these issues,” he said.
He appealed to the lawyers to cooperate and withdraw agitation pending talks, saying the government needs time to examine issues.
“The bar associations said they will take whatever request by the government to the members,” he said, adding he hopes they will withdraw. Rymbui said dialogue is the way forward.
“This issue can be solved only through mutual dialogue, not through confrontation,” he said, adding other issues related to working will be relooked and corrective measures taken.
