Shillong, July 1: Academic session of the new Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) will kick off this year, confirmed education minister Rakkam A Sangma after paying a visit to the college and Shillong Polytechnic on Monday.

Informing this after carrying out an inspection at the two institutes, Sangma said, “Today we inspected Shillong College of Engineering as well as the Polytechnic, along with officials, the principal, and staff. I wanted to meet them personally as this is the first year the engineering college will start its academic course.”
Classes are expected to begin by August and that the admission process has already started, he said.

“Government of India has approved the proposal sent to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for 30 seats each in two courses — Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering,” he said.
Asked about infrastructure readiness, Sangma assured, “We are ready. We are awaiting the final permissions from AICTE, and we are almost set to begin.”

Regarding faculty, he stated, “Some faculty members are already in place. The principal in-charge is from Shillong Polytechnic, and we have qualified personnel on board. Recruitment will be done as and when required.”
Notably, SGCE recently received AICTE approval for its undergraduate Civil and Electrical Engineering courses.
