Govt notifies officials entitled for name boards on vehicles

Shillong, May 27: In a bid to check “VIP culture”, the state government has decided to regulate the use of name boards on official vehicles by approving a list of officials entitled to use name boards and a standardised format of such boards.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said it was part of the government’s move against VIP culture.

“The second notification was a very simple notification, it was the regulation of the use of names or board of official vehicles,” Sangma said.

“As you recalled that we have come out with SOP where we had mentioned about different siren, lights and other VIP culture that we are very concerned about.”

He said the Transport department has now finalised as to who is eligible to display name boards and how they should appear.

“The Transport department will define who will be allowed to use the name board and not… Based on that decision, the Transport department today gave a list of individuals, rather than position, who can use the name board and who not and what will be the format of the name board,” Sangma said.

“There has to be a standard format as per designation which now will be used and that list was today approved,” he added.

The Chief Minister said the approved list spans several wings of government.

“Basically, it is the list of different officials and different positions at the government level and judiciary and mostly in administration and certain statutory positions from a central government perspective,” he said.
