Govt okays witness protection scheme

Shillong, Apr 8: As required under the provisions of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the state government has approved the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025 for protection of witnesses of different cases.

Informing this after a cabinet meeting, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the BNSS (erstwhile CrPC) implemented by the Centre and state governments provides for creation of a system for protection of witnesses.

“Based on that, we have approved the rules for the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025 with the objective of giving necessary protection to witnesses in different cases,” he added.

Under the scheme, district-level committees will be created in every district. The committee to be headed by a district magistrate and with members from administration will take decisions on the basis of the level of threats and the kind of protection required to be given to the witness.

The protection could in the form of security, anonymity, or being able to give witness on camera, the chief minister said.
